ILLNESS & INJURY

At Cornerstone Pediatrics, we understand medical care can’t always be scheduled in advance. When your child is sick or injured, you want help and care as soon as possible.

​

In the event your child is suffering a life-threatening emergency, you should dial 911 or proceed directly to the nearest emergency room.

​

For all other medical issues, you are welcome to contact us to schedule a same-day appointment. We are able to accommodate walk-in patients, though there may be a wait while staff work to modify the current day’s appointments to make room for a consultation with the doctor or nursing staff.

IMMUNIZATIONS

For children who are injured, it is important to assess the seriousness of the situation to determine whether a doctor visit is needed. For external wounds, you may see abrasions, bruising, and blood. Internal injuries may not show any outward symptoms other than swelling and pain.

Broken bones and dislocations will always require immediate medical attention, and you should proceed to your nearest emergency room. If your child is bleeding profusely, or if your child has experienced a head injury and lost consciousness, you should proceed to the nearest emergency room.

If your child is an infant who has suffered a head injury and won’t stop crying, vomits, becomes difficult to console, and isn’t walking or talking normally, you should contact the doctor immediately.

​

For more minor injuries, you should be able to wait for 24hrs to see the doctor. During that time, make sure to apply a cold pack or bandages, and keep any skin injuries clean. Monitor your child’s breathing, and check for fever or other signs of infection.

When it comes to injuries, trust your instincts. If you do not feel comfortable with your child’s appearance or behavior, it’s better to err on the side of caution and contact emergency services by calling 911.

SICK CHILD VISIT

If your child is ill and needs to see the doctor immediately, please contact us at 915-821-5900 to schedule a same-day appointment. Certain symptoms must always be evaluated by a physician, including earaches, cough with difficulty breathing, sore throat, frequent or painful urination, and extreme lethargy.

Before your visit, please do you best to have the following information ready for the nurse or doctor:

  • What symptoms your child is experiencing and how long they have been noticeable

  • Your child’s current temperature and its duration

  • Any medication your child is currently taking, including anything over-the-counter, along with any current prescription medication (please bring prescription information)

  • Allergies

  • Chronic conditions, such as Asthma or Diabetes

WHAT TO EXPECT

Throughout our entire intake and examination process, we will make sure to answer questions, provide information and calm any fears or concerns. We strive to foster strong relationships with our patients and their families because to us, your child isn’t just a name on a chart, they are part of the Cornerstone Pediatrics family.

TIPS FOR SUCCESFUL VISIT

To help us spend more time with your child, and less time tracking down paperwork or readjusting appointments, we ask that you plan ahead and schedule routine examinations in advance. Please have all your insurance paperwork available, along with immunization records, digital records, and your insurance card and photo identification. You can also find our intake forms on our website, or print them out via the patient portal.

A note about insurance: While insurance and Medicaid generally cover routine well-child checkups, having up to date information on your coverage will help us manage any unexpected charges, changes in co-pays or other issues.

​

Finally, promptness is appreciated! The doctor and his team make every effort to see all patients on time, with minimal waiting. To ensure our office runs smoothly, and that everyone gets enough time with their caregiver, we ask that you arrive at your designated appointment time, or notify us as soon as possible if you are late or unable to honor your appointment. In preparation for the exam, please dress your child in comfortable, loose-fitting clothing.
